Areca Nut HS Code: Classification before Shipment

Understand HS 0802.80 as a starting point for areca nut classification and why national tariff lines and processed products need separate checks.

For fresh or dried areca nuts, HS 0802.80 is a useful classification starting point. It is not the end of the customs inquiry: national tariff lines add detail, and a prepared product may need a different assessment.

This article explains how to organize classification questions. It is general information, not a binding customs ruling or a substitute for current advice from the relevant authority or a qualified customs professional.

Start with the internationally recognized description

The World Customs Organization’s Chapter 8 nomenclature lists areca nuts under subheading 0802.80. The chapter context concerns fruit and nuts in specified conditions, including fresh or dried material.

Use the code together with the actual product description. A code copied from an old invoice is not enough if the new goods differ in ingredients, treatment or preparation.

National tariff lines may distinguish the product differently

Importers work with the destination’s applicable tariff schedule and policy conditions, not only the six-digit international subheading. More detailed lines can distinguish forms or other product characteristics.

Do not assume that a longer code from one country can be pasted into another country’s declaration. Ask the importer or broker to confirm the local classification and keep their written basis with the transaction file.

Processing can change the classification question

Describe all relevant preparation and ingredients. A flavored mixture or another manufactured product should not inherit the classification of a raw kernel merely because areca is one component.

The same principle applies when words such as waste or extract appear in the offer. The physical composition and intended goods being declared matter more than an informal commercial nickname. Resolve ambiguity before quoting taxes or booking cargo.

Maintain a product-specific classification record

A useful file includes the product sheet, photographs or sample description, ingredient and process information where relevant, the proposed national code and the authority or professional consulted. Record the date of the check.

Classification is only one part of market access. Confirm the applicable policy, documentation and other requirements separately. Never change a description or code simply to bypass a restriction; if the actual product is not eligible, the shipment plan must change.
